Birth tissue donation is completely safe and painless for you and your baby. Following your scheduled C-section delivery, you have the option of donating birth tissue to help others in need. Your decision to share this gift with others does not affect the birth or medical care of you or your baby. There is no cost to you to donate and your participation in the program is voluntary.
Birth tissue includes the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid. These tissues helped to grow and develop your baby while you were pregnant and are normally discarded after birth. These tissues contain special cells that stimulate healing in recipients when properly transplanted by a doctor. Conditions such as burns, neurological damage, blood disorders, and difficult-to-heal wounds can all be treated by the application of birth tissue.
How can I participate in the Birth Tissue Donation Program?
It’s simple. Just say YES to birth tissue donation. Your child’s birth will not be affected in any way.
Contact DLSH at 1-800-245-7846 to see if birth tissue donation is an option at your hospital. If you are giving birth at a participating hospital, one of our donation coordinators will speak to you to answer any questions and schedule a convenient time to complete donation documents.
Our donation coordinators will work with your delivering physician and their team to ensure a smooth process.
After delivery, your birth tissue will be respectfully acquired by a DLSH technician under strict guidelines in accordance with accepted medical and ethical standards.
